2007 Conferences:

Christopher Newport University hosted two major conferences on its campus, both of which focused on the Jamestown colony and its important legacies.

Virginia Humanities Conference, March 30-31, 2007

In March 2007, the Virginia Humanities Conference held its annual conference with papers focusing on the theme "Jamestown 2007 and the Invention of America: Reality and Fiction." The keynote speaker was Pauline Strong, an anthropologist at the University of Texas, Austin and author of "Captive Selves, Captivating Others: The Politics and Poetics of Colonial American Captivity Narratives."

Originating perhaps as early as the 1940s, the Virginia Humanities Conference (VHC) is held annually, rotating among Virginia college and university campuses each year and bringing together individuals with an interest in the humanities and a desire to participate in a scholarly exchange of ideas in a very broad, interdisciplinary context.

Participation in each conference is open to all individuals who are interested and qualified and is not restricted only to residents of the state of Virginia. The VHC encourages participation by individuals and scholars from any of the humanities disciplines, including history, political science, anthropology, literature, modern languages, drama, philosophy, theology, and the arts (visual arts, music, dance, and architecture).

Children’s Literature Association, June 2007
In June 2007, the Children's Literature Association held its national annual conference in Newport News on CNU’s campus. The conference theme was "Anniversaries, Histories, and Colonialisms."

Papers by presenters considered the constructions of history and colonialisms in relation to children's literature. The ties between history and national or regional identity, the experience of both immigrant and invaded indigenous peoples, cultural clashes and meldings, and the desire to commemorate (or critique) past events were all topics of related interest.

The Children's Literature Association encourages serious scholarship and research in children's literature. Through fellowships and scholarships, annual awards, and national conferences, the association encourages high standards of exploration and criticism of children’s literature.
